So this weekend Thor Ragnarok hit theaters. It’s the third of the Thor movies and the seventeenth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Which means that this week the debates will begin. Was this the best Marvel film? Was this the best Thor movie? Is the Marvel formula getting old after 17 movies? And so on…

So I just want to take a moment to give my initial thoughts on Thor Ragnarok with out giving away any spoilers opn the film. I will only mention things that have been revealed in the previews while talking about the film, but here is what I thought of Thor’s third solo outing. Over all the film is very enjoyable. It’s a big budget popcorn flick with lots of action and good clean Marvel fun for the whole family.

With that being said it wasn’t the best of the Marvel films. It suffered from some pacing problems, but that was due to the amount of story that was utilized in this film. As most people know from the previews along with the main story Marvel also gave us a version of Planet Hulk story line from the comics as well. Though I enjoyed the inclusion of one of my favorite story lines from the comics, in some way it made it feel like the Ragnarok story line was secondary. That maybe some finer details of the Asgardian apocalypse were left out due to the length of the film.

The other criticism I know we will hear this week is that it didn’t feel like a Thor film. Yes there is a lot of comedy in this movie along with having a much richer color palette then it’s predecessors. But in all honesty, the colorful scenes do not take place on Asgard and I feel that was done to contrast Sakaar from Asgard. As for the comedy, it simply helps the movie have a more light hearted feel then it’s predecessors, which in my mind made it feel more like the rest of the other Marvel films.

But what I found most enjoyable about the film is we finally get a much truer version of the Hulk from the comics then we have ever gotten on film or TV. I am a long time Hulk reader and was genuinely pleased by this depiction of the strongest of the Marvel characters. I won’t say more out of fear of possibly spoiling it, but it was very well done.

So I’ll leave you with this, do yourself a favor and go see this on the big screen. It’s a very enjoyable fun ride and if anything you will have a good time. And stay tuned for our full spoilerific review on the next episode of Super Hero Speak!
